Yes, the problem is serving it as 'application/xhtml+xml'. If you serve it as normal HTML, even with the XHTML 1.1 Doctype, XRAY will work.

If you absolutely have to have it served as 'application/xhtml+xml', and are using Firefox, you can download the Firebug extension, which provides similar functionality to XRAY, and will work with your site.

If I click on the bookmarklet, nothing happens. XRAY works fine on other pages, why not mine? I am thinking because my page is XHTML 1.1, and is being delivered as an "application/xhtml+xml" file.

Hi Dave,

Give me a shout. I think I can help you. I do custom sites using Modern Standards only. I take the time to carefully ensure you will be totally happy with your site. I do not do generic template designs. Instead I take the time to work slowly with clients to ensure the end result is what they had envisioned.

Some very recent projects:

I know what I want, but I'm a writer, not a designer. I understand CSS and XHTML, but understanding is only the beginning of really knowing, so I defer the design of my site to those of you who really know more so than just understand.

I am a registered owner of StyleMaster, which I settled on after searching exhaustively for a WYSIWYG XHTML CSS -valid site development platform. StyleMaster is the best available according to my findings. I have chosen StyleMaster to build my site and to maintain it.

I say all this up front, so you know that I belong here. I need help with my site. The kind of help I need deserves compensation. Simple.

Let's talk.

Here are my requirements and specifications:
1. CSS valid (NO TABLES)
2. XHTML valid
3. Fully on site search engine optimized (SEO) for Google, Yahoo, and MSN. I do off-site SEM, not you.
4. I provide all content (text, graphics) that you edit to make search engine optimized
5. I provide you some intelligence on the authority sites with whom I am competing. Your SEO/SEM findings can go beyond my own.
6. I provide static mockups for the layouts of each page of the site, which you will do in valid CSS/XHTML
7. Phase I will be 7 pages: Home, About, Gallery, Reviews, Knowledge, SiteMap, Network

I am an individual entrepreneur, not a company. I am prepared to compensate you fairly. I know enough about the work I am asking for to know what is fair. Make me a fair offer, and I will provide you with work on an ongoing basis.

Thanks John,

Actually, it is suppose to float right. I was redesigning this site and I used some snippets from another site. The honest truth is I really don't know my left from my right or is my right from my left. So between those two thing I messed up.

Now the problem. I actually turned out to be something even more simple. I meant to wrap both the content and navigation but I ended up excluding the navigation from the wrapper. This kicked off everything and sent things crazy. Dreamweaver didn't what to do so it gave me the "drop float" problem.

Note to self always turn on borders around your boxes. It sure makes things easier to see what is going on.

Again thanks John I really appreciate it.

Wily,

at a first glance, try making the content and lift side (which ironically floats to the right ;-) slightly narrower. At present their total width is 30% plus 65%, but there is also padding on each, so the width in total may end up more than 10% of the width of the page - in this situation, the right floated element moves down below the element it is floating next to.

You can see this effect in acton if you narrow the window.

Let us know how you get on,

Its a little hard to figure out what's going on. There are tables mixed with CSS that is all imbedded in the markup.

You might want to try adding all the CSS as an imported style sheet. The markup then becomes easier to follow. Do you need the tables? You might also try using CSS with different colors for the borders so you see what's going on during development. Right now you have white borders so its all tough to debug visually.

The border shows up in Firefox and Opera as well. I don't see any way to get rid of it.

As it is, you have border set to none on that element. Notice what happens if you set the border to 1px solid black. That's the border. What you are trying to change is the gui.

Set Notepad++ to ANSI which basically agrees will your meta tag which says the page is using the iso-8859-1 character set.

UTF-8 is the only other option you should use with that program, but you don't want to include the byte order mark (BOM) if you go that route, so you would keep ANSI selected and also select "UTF-8 without BOM" and make sure you change your meta tag character set from "iso-8859-1" to "utf-8".

The Little Endian character encoding is only a problem with index.htm. The style sheet and advertising.htm are fine. Most likely it was caused by an incorrect character set selection in the program you used to write that page.

What software are you using to write your html? Check its document format/character encoding preferences. Make sure the encoding for index.htm is set to iso-8859-1 before you save it again.

You can certainly use the id attribute with the body tag if you want to have the same style sheet apply a unique styling to the body of different pages. You just won't need a second body tag to add the id.

I have 2 body tags, I thought I needed a <body id> tag for each webpage on my website - i.e., home, about, marketing, advertising etc.

Cary, thank you for reviewing my code. I am working on fixing the bugs you found. I also made many changes over the past few hours so I am going back to fix the bugs that are still there.

Here are my questions:
1) PAGE INFO/ UTF-16LE (the Little Endian encoding.
I noticed that too, but that was the setting when I downloaded the StyleMaster trial. What should it be set at?

I will make the changes now.

THANK YOU! You were a tremendous help!

One really valuable thing to do is validate your HTML (and CSS) to find any errors - somebrowsers are very lenient toward errors, others much stricter, and almost all will handle them in different ways.

Starting with valid HTML and CSS, you'll have a much better chance of sorting out what is going wrong.

Correction:

So many things I missed here. You had this:

<image src="newmbb_datafiles/sites_etc.png) alt "websites_etc" style="float:right; width=450 height=315 border:0;" />

It should be this:

<img src="newmbb_datafiles/sites_etc.png" alt="websites_etc" style="float:right; border:0" width="437" height="317" />

However, a better alt attribute would be "Generate Visibility - Make the Sale" or something like that.

You also seem to have nested body tags. You can only have one set of opening and closing body tags per page.

I found some other things.

You have this text in index.htm:

<image src="newmbb_datafiles/sites_etc.png) alt "websites_etc" style="float:right; width=450 height=315 border:0;" />

It should be

<image src="newmbb_datafiles/sites_etc.png") alt "websites_etc" style="float:right; border:0" width="450" height="315" />

Now you have to decide if you want this image included this way or as a background style for the #websites_image div. Currently, you seem to be trying to do both at the same time, or at least you would except for one small problem. You have this in your code:

<div align="websites_image">

but it should be this:

<div id="websites_image">

If you go with using the img tag, then you don't need the div containing it.

If you decide to go with the background styling and drop the img tag, change the #websites_image styling to this:

#websites_image{
float: right;
width:450px;
height:315px;
background-image: url(newmbb_datafiles/sites_etc.png);
background-repeat: no-repeat;
}

After you figure out how you want to go with this, you'll still have another problem to fix, the lack of PNG alpha transparency support in IE6.

Here's a fix:

The easiest way to PNG support for IE6 has a couple files you need. Get the iepngfix.htc and the blank.gif files.

Put them both in the same location as you index.htm and style sheet files.

Finally, include this style at the top of your style sheet:

img { behavior: url(iepngfix.htc); }

This fixes the transparency for all png images that are being displayed using img tags.

If you are using a transparent png as a background image for a div, you also need to include the element with the png background like so:

img, #websites_image { behavior: url(iepngfix.htc); }

I also noticed your advertising page doesn't have a closing html tag and just to let you know, you shouldn't include alt text for background images in your style sheet.
