Hi DreamTiger,

I think that the next beta has this fixed - also, we've implemented error handling in such a way as such things will generate a report, and let you send it to us, then keep using the application, without having to quit

I had one more jitter when bouncing from the old 4.x version of SM to the new beta. Tossed the prefs file away again and so far the new beta as been rock solid...

John,

I moved the preferences file to my desktop and launched SM5b3. NilOjectException error is gone! Not only that, the keyboard/mouse crazziness is not happening, and even XRAY is making more sense. Something about that old pref file was causing a lot of jittery, scrambly stuff. I am going to send it to you in case it helps. Things are looking up.

Thanks to Max sending the preferences file along, I've been able to fix the bug for the next beta version.

If you are having a NilObjectException Error, try throwing out the preferences and restarting.

Dreamtiger,

I' believe I've now fixed the property pane problem

I'll have to look into the preview pane problem, as this is the first report like this and i've not see it here internally as well.

XRAY is I suppose a matter of taste - a lot of people love the new version - and has rave reviews for the online version. For future versions, we'll definitely look into making "just show the element" as an option.

Not at all sure about the keyboard and mouse craziness - can you describe this in any detail?

See the previous post re preferences, and the app not launching

thanks again

John,

About the Property Panel and the Preview refresh, I don't use Command Tab, and the Property Panel disappears while in Style Master. To get it back, I have to use the toolbar icon at right, and it won't come back unless I select a different property. The Preview starts out refreshing by itself when changes are made, but stops, and has to be manually refreshed with the button. After a while, the button stops working, and no refresh is available.

Xray is a good idea, but implementation is overwhelming the visual appearance of the feedback pane, filling it with blocks and areas of jarring colors that obscure the design. I recommend taking a minimalist approach to xray.

Before the nilObject craziness, the app was literally going nuts with keyboard & mouse input - doing completely unpredictable stuff. I will soon try to use it on my Macbook Pro and see if things are different than on my Mac Pro, where I have been having these problems.

This is a bummer as I was really, really liking SM5! It looks like it will be a major step forward from version 4. I have been a loyal SM customer for quite a while now and have high hopes that this issue will be resolved in due time...

Just got the "NilObjectException was not handled: Program must shut down..." error again. SM5 b3 was really bugging out. It was starting to produce random & unexpected result from keyboard & mouse input. After a while it became impossible to use. I decided to restart my Mac & reopen Style Master. The nilObject error appeared at launch, & I was unable to launch.

DreamTiger,

2 more bugs I am seeing all the time:

1. The floating Property Panel disappears, and requires fiddling to bring it back.

this is most likely when you command tab to Style Master from another app - the way the system notifies Style Master of this event has changed, and we are working to fix this

2. The Preview Pane fails to refresh after a while. Refresh just stops working.

Is this when you change something in your style sheet? What happens if you hit the refresh button?

I am frustrated because there is nothing else like Style Master, but Style Master seems to be having a hard time making it into the Leopard era. It drives me nuts every time I use it, because there are just too many errors. I don't want to be a complainer. I am a big fan of Style Master, but it has been hard to use since I moved to Leopard.

We have definitely taken too long to get completely up to speed for the latest version of the OS. We've also done a massive overhaul of the app - new preview engine, new code engine, complete rewrite of XRAY, and a tonne of new features. But we are definitely closing in on finalizing the app. We test it constantly internally too, and fix anything that comes up here - so external reports like these are really important and greatly appreciated.

BTW, something did just totally break undo for this beta release - working on that as we speak

thanks

DreamTiger,

About visual feedback: I am referring to the way selected statements highlight in the code, and in the preview pane. And vice versa - selected areas in the preview pane highlighting in the statements & code, & so forth. I can see it basically works, but sometimes it doesn't. It is also complicated by the method you are using to highlight areas in the preview pane. Lots of colors jumping around, and things changing dramatically. In between this, and the times it just stops working, it's somewhat dizzying.

I've not got other reports of this sort of thing - in terms of it stopping and starting. You can turn it off, if that makes life easier too.

I wish you could make the visual feedback more low key and understated. I mentioned before that I prefer the old 1 px colored outlines to the new blocks and fields of color. Can't see my design through all that.

The idea behind XRAY is to show the boxmodel - margin, padding and border - it can also be turned off.

And, it's actually hackable too - inside the Help_Files/Preview folder there's a file called xray.js - you can edit this to change how XRAY works (make a backup copy first ;-)

I'm hoping for later editions to make that process a lot simpler too.

I had been using the beta for sometime and all was well. I was running MAMP when I got the error message. Every time I start the beta I get this message, even with a computer restart (I am using the latest Mac Pro). I dumped that beta and downloaded the new version 3 beta. Still get the error.

My old copy of SM4.6 works though, but after using version 5 going back to 4.6 seems, well, so...

There's no really known way to fix up this error, it's just something that crops up from time to time. The best bet would be to uninstall StyleMaster entirely, then re-install, see if that fixes the issue.

If it doesn't work get back to me, and I'll try and think of something else that might help.

OK, I downloaded the new OS X SM 5 version 3 beta and same thing: this error will shutdown the program at launch...

I noticed an old thread on the same topic with no real answer. Something to do with the underlying Realbasic platform?

My copy of Version 5 beta 1 was chugging along nicely but all of a sudden I am getting this message when I launch the program: "NilObjectException was not handled: Program must shut down..."

I will try the beta 3.

Any ideas?
