Is this an unanswerable question?

  1. I have asked this question in numerous places and have not received an answer, Can or can it not be done!

I am trying to build a collapsible menu (No images) but on only one of the 2nd level sub menu's I would like for it to be similar to a vertical fly-out, x-frame (without the frame) or slide out. A collapsible menu is in one column and this fly-out (not sure what else to call it) resides in a second column to the right of the first. | !menu! | |item 1|
    | !sub! | |item 2|
    | !sub!>| |item 3|
    | !menu! | | |

Hope my cheesy diagram helps :o)
How can I achieve this?- Sami

    Samikey,

firstly can I chime in with my general dislike of "fly out menus". They tend to look kind of cool, but are a real usability and accessibility nightmare. And they won;t work at all on mobile Safari (which has no hover state) - which probably points toward how many handheld user experiences will go in the next few years.

One of the big problems with flyouts is that while on the Mac and Windows there is a lot of intelligence built into how the system tracks the mouse, and shows and hides menus, this is close to impossible to do in a browser, and so, users intuitive expectations of how a menu will respond to their mouse movements are wrong in subtle ways.

    OK, enough of that.

I suspect you'll almost certainly need to use Javascript as well as CSS for this menu design.

One suggestion is to check out the many products ProjectVII have, which IIRC includes menu CSS/Javascript

    http://www.projectseven.com/products/index.htm

The few dollars spent may save you many many many hours fiddling (and let me tell you, to get something like this working in IE and the modern browsers is going to be a lot of effort!)

    Hope this helps a bit!

  3. A Fly-out is just an example of the look I am going for in the 2nd level sub menu. I would like for the enu to stay out though, so the fly-out menu would not work.

I would like the look of a collapsible (accordion style) menu for the main menu with one one of the 2nd level subs in a fly-out/slide-out/cross frame looking column menu. I am trying to merge the two types of menus together.
    Example would be
    Main Menu Item
    1st level sub 1
    2nd level sub 1
    New vertical column - item 1 - item 20.

I checked out Project 7 and did not see what I am looking for.

    Thanks for you input.

You can also check out Listomatic if you haven't already.

I didn't check out too many of them, but thought this might be similar to what you had in mind:

    Vertical to Horizontal List

  5. This is closer than anyone else has shown but not quite it. Here is a link to a sample pic of what I am trying to to.

    Thanks...

Maybe you can manage to combine these two menus.
